Brown and White Rabbit

Rescued Wabbit!

Forget Go, Diego Go! - Nickelodeon’s wildlife rescuing super kid. Z’s out in the pouring rain (yes rain in Bakersfield) rescuing domesticated Rabbits – well rabbit, just one.

On Monday night it pour’d down with much needed rain. When I say poured, I mean, fell in bucket loads, flooded our patio and ran off the roof like Yosemite Falls.  It was the rain coming off the roof that made me decide to open the front door and checkout just how heavy the rainfall was.  To my amazement, there, huddling under a plant and stranded on a small island of high ground between two Class 1.5 rainfall rapids was a half drowned brown and white rabbit.

It didn’t take Z but half a second to cotton(tail) on to the fact that something interesting was happening outside. He left his train-set and raced into the rain with me following behind – yelling “stop Z, you’ll get wet socks.”

Z and I darted between raindrops to checkout the sodden creature.  I immediately checked that it wasn’t foaming at the mouth (can rabbits even get Rabies?) – which it wasn’t. So Z and I coaxed it inside. At the first sign of rescue the rabbit, obviously domesticated, accepted and hopped into the dry towel. Then somewhat reluctantly Z was also pursued to come in out of the rain.

Rescued Rabbit Feeding Time

After toweling the rabbit off, and checking it further for signs of illness and abuse, we make a temporary home out of a large Amazon box (I wonder if I should review their packaging as “Makes great home for vagrant bunny!”) and gathered some carrots, which Z insisted on holding while the rabbit gnawed away.

I’m not really in the habit of rescuing stray animals – but my husband would disagree. Only, with the rain and the chilly temperatures I couldn’t leave the rabbit outside. Not to mention the the clowder of cats that may have been eyeing the bunny up for dinner.

Not really wanting a pet, we quickly sent out an email to the neighborhood watch to ask if anyone was missing a rabbit. – As of now, no responses.

Z, apart from learning to creep around the house saying ”Be vewy vewy quiet, I’m hunting wabbits”, loves feeding and petting the rabbit. I’m trying not let him get too attached, as hopefully someone will claim the rabbit in the next few days – otherwise I don’t know what we’ll do.
